Massachusetts faces the triple threat of impacts from climate change, the loss of biodiversity and inequitable enjoyment of the benefits of nature. Because Massachusetts lacks a significant, permanent fund for nature conservation, our progress in addressing these ongoing crises lags behind what science tells us is needed. Existing state programs to address climate, biodiversity, and access to nature through land protection are underfunded and oversubscribed.
By ensuring that a portion of the sales tax the state already collects is set aside for nature protection, we can unlock over $100 million per year towards the state’s goal to conserve 30% of land statewide by 2030, all without raising taxes.
HD2707 and SD2276, filed by Reps. Blais and Montaño, and Sen. Feeney, is a new piece of legislation for the 2025-26 session, and needs support from as many legislators as possible to gain some momentum. Ask your legislator to cosponsor the bills.
Personal messages and stories are most effective in speaking with decision-makers. Try to personalize your message as much as possible by sharing why protecting nature matters to you.
