Ask your legislator to support climate-focused education

Curriculums outlining how we teach science and social studies in our public schools do not contain instruction on climate change, and teachers across the state don’t yet know how to teach the topic.

HD1596 and SD896, filed by Rep. Domb and Sen. Lewis, would provide support for teachers and school districts that wish to integrate climate education into their classrooms, and they need support from as many legislators as possible to gain some momentum. Ask your legislator to cosponsor the bills.

Personal messages and stories are most effective in speaking with decision-makers. Try to personalize your message as much as possible by sharing a story or experience about youth engagement in climate change, or simply why climate change education is important to you.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to respectfully request that you cosponsor HD1596 and SD896, which supports the development and implementation of interdisciplinary climate curriculum in elementary and secondary schools in Massachusetts.

High-quality, standards-aligned education in climate change, its causes, possible solutions, and professional development for teachers to teach this complex subject, is crucial to ensuring the next generation has the tools to address its defining challenge.

Our response to the global crisis of climate change depends on today's youth having the understanding and skills to address it. Currently, educators are not spending meaningful time on the topic because it's not required, and even more significantly, they don't feel prepared to teach it. Some educators are not even sure if teaching the causes and impacts of climate change is allowed.

Only students who take the initiative to educate themselves and get involved, either through electives or extracurricular groups, are getting meaningful exposure to climate change topics.

I hope you'll consider cosponsoring HD1596 and SD896. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
