Don't let those pumpkin seeds go to waste! Bake them in the oven, or toast them in a heavy skillet on the stove top. Toss with a touch of oil and a bit of salt or other seasoning for a quick tasty seasonal snack.

Know Your Squash
Table after table of gorgeous squash grace every farmer's market this time of year. Squash really is the star of the season, so it's time to get to "Know Your Cucurbit!" Squash and pumpkins are closely related, both being part of the cucurbit (gourd) family. Generally, they grow on vines and have beautiful flowers (that are sometimes eaten before they even produce a fruit). The so-called winter squash varieties also store well, and can be enjoyed months after they're harvested.
Drumlin Farm produces several varieties of squash and pumpkin, most of which will keep well into the winter months. Members of our Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) receive squash regularly in their fall shares. You can also purchase many of them at our farmstand, or on Saturdays at our stand at the Union Square Farmer's Market in Somerville. Learn More>>
Thank You
Did you know that Drumlin Farm includes over 232 acres and around 20 buildings? Maintaining all these facilities is a full-time job! In fact it's several full-time jobs. Our fantastic property department is tasked with stewarding and maintaining the land and all our facilities (with plenty of help from our crops and livestock crew). The property team consists of Geoff, Garth, Erik, and two dedicated volunteers, Fred and Brad. Perhaps you've seen the crew out on the sanctuary in one of their electric GEM cars?
On any given day the team might be working with the ecological manager to control invasives and maintain habitats, involved in projects with contractors on-site, mowing, removing snow, or setting up for an event. Can you imagine over 12 hours a week of mowing, or 32 hours of snowplowing per storm? Next time you visit the farm look for our property staff hard at work. Feel free to ask them questions about what they are doing or about the farm!
Boo!
Slightly spooky and super silly, Drumlin Farm's Tales of the Night Halloween celebration is a family favorite. Young visitors will enjoy our Story Book Trail and tales by the fireplace. For those a bit more daring, venture out into Boyce field for a Haunted Hayride. There will also be spooky insects in our creepy critter mansion, a stunning display of jack-o'-lanterns, and plenty of warm cider served from a cauldron. Purchase your tickets in advance to avoid the lines.
It's Official; Autumn is Here! Spend the Weekend Enjoying it at Drumlin Farm
The month will get off to a fantastic start on October 1. That day we'll officially open our new visitor area in the recently completed Farm Life Center. Come try out our video kiosk, or take a quiet break and read a story. For those curious to learn more about the green features of our new building, there will be tours offered all day from 10 am to 4 pm as part of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's Green Buildings Open House. And as if that wasn't enough excitement for one day, it's also the first of our October Harvest Weekends. Weather permitting, there will be opportunities for pick-your-own raspberries!
