NEWS & NOTES

Prowls for Owls
If you've ever wondered who's calling out there in the dark, now is the time to find out. Winter is a great time to spot one of the many types of owls found in Massachusetts.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
A Look Back at 2011

Boy with netWe have weathered the storms (literally and figuratively) and are happy to report another year of tremendous accomplishments.

Among the highlights: we safeguarded 640 acres of land, led programs for 212,000 people, spent the summer with 8,000 campers, made over 250 trips to the State House to meet with legislators, published the comprehensive State of the Birds report—I could go on and on.

We couldn't have done any of this without the generosity of our members and supporters. To all of you, I offer my heartfelt thanks!

— Laura Johnson, Mass Audubon President

PROGRAM NOTES
Top 5 Winter Weather Predictors

Woolly Bear

Not only did Massachusetts have an unseasonably warm November, but, according to the National Weather Service, our fall made the record books (Boston hit its all-time warmest since records started in 1872).

What does this mean for the coming winter? We took the opportunity to explore some of our favorite winter weather folktales to see what nature may or may not predict.

Find five winter weather predictors and share your own favorites.

SNAPSHOT
Where in Mass Audubon Are We Now?

Where Are We Now? Photo by PapaDunes Photography

Congratulations to everyone who guessed that the last photo featured in Explorations was taken at Pleasant Valley in Lenox. Of all of those with correct guesses, Chris of Hudson, NY, was chosen at random to be the lucky winner of a pocket field guide.

Ready to guess another Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary?
From the vantage point shown, you probably won't see the sanctuary's namesake animal, but you may hear the faint cheering of sports fans (if you come on the right day of the week). The sanctuary also holds the honor of being Mass Audubon's oldest.

Email your guess by January 15 and you could win a pocket field guide.

LIVING WITH WILDLIFE
Following The Tracks

Racoon TracksWinter is upon us, which means it's only a matter of time until our ground is blanketed in white fluffy snow. And with it, one of the best (and most challenging) activities of winter: identifying which animal made which track.

A lot of factors go into matching a track with its owner, such as size, pattern, location relative to other tracks, depth, etc. Not sure where to start? We can help.

Learn how to identify animal tracks during an upcoming program.

EVENT
This Superbowl is for the Birds

Superbowl of Birding, Photo by Brenda EunsonMost people equate the Super Bowl with football, nachos, and commercials. At Mass Audubon, it also means birds, binoculars, and, of course, friendly competition.

On January 28th, Joppa Flats hosts the Superbowl of Birding IX, a 12-hour competition to find the greatest number of species and to earn the most points based on the rarity of the birds recorded.

Find out how to join a Superbowl team.

GET INVOLVED
Help Out While Keeping Warm

Volunteering IndoorsFor some, nothing is more invigorating than working outside on a cold winter day. Not one of those people but still want to lend a helping hand? We have just the volunteer opportunities for you!

Across the state, our wildlife sanctuaries are looking for people to help with everything from admissions and gift shop assistants to exhibit docents and wildlife care.

Find an indoor volunteer opportunity near you.
