Using Innovative Zoning to Save Land and Money

Open Space Design is a practical approach to subdivision design that maximizes natural resource protection and optimizes the use of land, while saving money for developers, local communities, and residents. In this workshop, you will learn about the State's new, improved model Open Space Design zoning bylaw and hear case studies of several municipalities that have successfully used innovative zoning to produce development results that match the community's character and needs. This workshop is designed to assist communities in the implementation of the 495/MetroWest Development Compact Plan.


Speakers will include:  Kurt Gaertner, Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs; and Priscilla Chapman, Taunton River Watershed Advocate, Mass Audubon.

Using the Community Preservation Act to
Protect Priority Habitat in Worcester County

Learn about projects communities have completed under the CPA and the costs and benefits of the program to communities like yours. We will discuss how CPA can help your community: preserve open space and historic sites, create affordable housing and develop outdoor recreational facilities.

We will share tools to help communities use CPA funds strategically, focusing land protection efforts on areas that are most critical. Communities in attendance will be presented with community-specific maps of the priority habitat areas (BioMap2). We will also discuss the recently passed improvements to the CPA.

Fall Conference

Mass Audubon is a sponsnor of MACC's 2012 Fall Conference, which will focus on 'Roads and Water: Maintenance & Protection.' Topics to be covered include the regulatory process and procedures for road maintenance projects, working with the state Department of Transportation, emergency road repairs and other important issues.

Citizen Planner Training Collaborative (CPTC)
Fall Workshop Schedule- Now Available

CPTC has a great line-up of workshops this fall! Learn about creating a Master Plan, siting an renewable energy facility, and discuss the “nuts and bolts” of serving on a Planning Board or ZBA. Courses are held across the state - many are eligible for credit toward the CPTC certification program, and/or credit under the MIIA Insurance Rewards Program.

Tall Trees and Advanced Tree Measuring
Friday, October 12, 9:15am-4:30pm

Healthy American Chestnut Tree

Mohawk Trail State Forest is home to the tallest trees in New England, including the 171 foot tall Chief Jake Swamp white pine. Bob Leverett and other members of the Native Tree Society will demonstrate the most accurate measurements of tree dimensions using state-of-the art equipment. Meet at the headquarters of Mohawk Trail State Forest in Charlemont, MA on October 12th at 9:00AM. Some easy walking is involved, 3 to 3.5 miles total. Wear sturdy footwear, bring a snack, lunch, and water. Co-sponsored by DCR, Mass Audubon, and Laser Technology, Inc.
