Booming Snowy Owl Season

  Snowy Owl by Dave Larson

New England has seen a major spike in snowy owls this year!

One spot snowy owls particularly like is the airport. Norman Smith of Mass Audubon's Blue Hills Trailside Museum has been trapping snowy owls at Boston's Logan Airport and releasing them safely elsewhere for more than 30 years.

Learn more about where to see snowy owls, how we protect them at Logan Airport, and how you can help support Norman's work.

Report Cards for Our Birds

BBA 2 eBookAfter years of planning and 46,000 hours in the field, the Breeding Bird Atlas 2 (BBA2) is finally complete. The largest citizen science program ever undertaken in the state compares the status of breeding birds in the 1970s with their status today. It's available as an ebook via iTunes and it will soon  be available as a print-on-demand publication as well. You can also view all of the content on our website.

In conjunction with BBA2, we have also released State of the Birds 2013. This document summarizes some of BBA2's key findings and provides practical strategies for our partners and members to take direct conservation action.

View the Breeding Bird Atlas 2 and State of the Birds 2013 online or purchase the one-of-a-kind eBook via iTunes.

SNAPSHOT
Where in Mass Audubon Are We Now?

Congratulations to everyone who guessed that the last photo featured in Explorations was taken at Great Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Wareham. Of those with correct guesses, Cheryl of Seminole, FL, was chosen at random to be the lucky winner of a pocket field guide.

Ready to guess another Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary?
The standing dead trees and snags in the pond at this unstaffed wildlife sanctuary provide nesting sites for bluebirds, pileated woodpeckers, great blue herons, ospreys, and an occasional great horned owl.

Email your guess by January 15 and you could win a pocket field guide.
