We will provide snacks and encourage you to bring a refillable water bottle.

Early Spring 2014

Dear Friends of Allens Pond,

Red-winged Blackbird

One step out of the car and you're instantly tuned into signs of early spring here at Allens Pond.

Red-winged blackbirds and killdeer have been calling and reports of returning osprey have been coming in with increased frequency.

After a really cold stretch this past winter, it's great to see the parking lot filling up with birders on the lookout for returning migrants and families coming to connect in many ways with a walk outdoors.

Also returning to the sanctuary are our summer interns, and we are close to finalizing the process of choosing from excellent candidates who will spend their summer here, growing both personally and professionally while gaining valuable knowledge and skills at both Allens Pond and Great Neck. If you are interested in providing housing or any type of assistance to our interns, please contact us.

We have a lot of programs coming up this spring, Gina is leading a Free Friday Walk at our Great Neck Sanctuary in Wareham this Friday at 9am and Lauren is hosting a great Vernal Pool Workshop and Walk on Friday, March 28th at Stone Barn Farm. We will also host a Coastal Waterbird Work Day on Saturday, March 29th where you can come lend a hand erecting symbolic fencing on our beaches and birding the coastline in search of these important species.

We are happy to report that bird walks are returning in May! Birding Allens Pond will be held on Fridays, May 2nd and 30th from 8am until 11am and Paul Champlin will also be leading some fantastic bird walks in May, Early Birding with Paul Champlin - they start at 5:30am and run until noon. Space is limited for these programs to maximize the experience - be sure to register to take part!

Enjoy the rising temperature, and Happy Spring!

Hope to see you soon,

~The Allens Pond Team~

Duck Derby News

Get Your Ducks for the 11th Annual Duck Derby!

Mass Audubon Allens Pond Duck Derby LogoYes, it's the 11th year of our fabulous fundraiser - and we have set a lofty goal to exceed last year's recordbreaking number of racing ducks...won't you help us get 6000 quackers to the starting line this summer?

Adopt your ducks for the 2014 Duck Derby today!

Not familiar with the Duck Derby? It's our largest fundraiser and the Grand Prize is dinner for two, anywhere in the world, with round trip airfare, two nights' lodging and dinner on us. That's the best $10 lottery around and all proceeds go back to the work we do here at Allens Pond.

$10 gets you a single racer, $40 grants you a flock of five and $100 adopts a phenomenal "Box of Quackers"...think of some creative names for each entry and adopt online, it's safe, easy and the quickest way to get your (potentially) trip-of-a-lifetime quacker. "Sunny", the 2013 winner, is on her way to the sunny Dominican Republic with the Krynicki family...where would YOU go?

Be sure to mark your calendars for this year's Duck Derby race...Saturday, August 16th. The ducks will race the channel at 10am before kicking off the Derby Festival at 11am where you can enjoy great food, music, friends and the auctions before we announce the winner(s).

Are you a runner?

2014 Ducky Dash LogoJoin us for the 3rd Annual Ducky Dash 5k road race and Kid's Totally Quackers Obstacle Course on Saturday, August 2nd at 8am. Each runner receives an entry into the 2014 Duck Derby - we believe that dinner for two, anywhere in the world, plus r/t airfare and 2 nights' lodging is WAY better than a race t-shirt...Register today!

Thanks again to the Ladera Foundation for their continued, generous support of this event, and to our race management company, 3C Race Productions who donates a percentage of all online registrations back to Allens Pond.
