"The Perch"

May 2014

Dear Friends of Allens Pond,

2104 Duck Derby Winners

The Krynicki Family, prepping to enjoy a family vacation in Punta Cana along with their winning duck, Sunny.

Spring is here and boy, are we busy...

We enjoyed a fabulous April Vacation Week with our Adventure Days youth programming, migratory bird walks, and time spent out on the beaches and trails.

Oh yeah, and we just completed our phenomenal 24 hour birding fundraiser Bird-a-thon, with 171 species reported in as of today. Support the Allens Pond team with a donation today!

We also had a chance to bid "Bon Voyage" to the Krynicki family, our 2013 Duck Derby winners, who were off to enjoy some family time in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic.

Our Coastal Waterbird program is in full swing and we have a team update below. Also, Diamondback Terrapin and other turtle species are active and in the midst of mating and egg-laying; please let us know if you encounter any Terrapin or Eastern Box Turtle by calling the field station at (508) 636-2437 or emailing.

Our Facebook page is also a busy place, with over 1,000 people following us...if you're on Facebook, please "like" our page and stay connected; we update frequently.

Springtime is a time for renewal and we encourage you to join in. Come out and hike a trail, take part in one of our many programs and reconnect with nature!

Hope to see you soon,

~The Allens Pond Team~

Give Peace - and Chicks - a Chance!

Piping Plover Chicks

Help these little birds!

It's that time of year when piping plovers are back on the beaches of Massachusetts and Allens Pond is playing host to a few nesting pairs so far.

Predator activity has been high again this year and some of our nests have been predated.

We no longer use exclosures for nests because the predator community is keying in on exclosures and ambushing adult piping plovers. We are hopeful that these pairs will be more successful when they re-nest 7-10 days after the first nest fails.

Piping plovers are threatened species protected under state and federal laws. The greatest threat to their livelihood is human recreational use of beaches.

To ensure piping plover protection against human caused disturbance please:

  • Respect posted areas and symbolic fencing,
  • Do not linger near nests,
  • Keep dogs leashed and away from piping plover habitat.
  • Please exercise the "leave no trace" rule and pack all trash up and out with you when on the beaches to deter predator interest.

It is best to assume that any area symbolically fenced and posted contains a nesting pair and should be avoided.

Our Amazing Volunteers Work for Wildlife

April was National Volunteer Month and we were very fortunate to work with many individuals and groups on some pretty outstanding projects.

UMass Dartmouth Students came out for a day and worked hard with us to erect coastal waterbird symbolic fencing and perform some beach work.

We also had a wonderful Statewide Volunteer Day, and welcomed a large team of hard workers from near and far for the morning.

The volunteers enabled us to weed and prep the butterfly garden, clearing two truckloads of weeds and debris away and also planted our raised beds at the field staton.  They rocked it!
