Welcome to the return of the
Volunteer Newsletter created especially with Wellfleet Bay volunteers in
mind!
Our goal is to help you keep up with Wellfleet Bay news, new
volunteer opportunities, to learn more about your co-workers, and what each of us enjoys about working around the sanctuary.
We hope to publish every other month. Please
feel free to make suggestions for articles and volunteer profiles or anything
else you think might be relevant. Thanks for reading and see you soon at
the sanctuary!

Volunteer Opportunities
Reimagining a Visit to Wellfleet Bay
The sanctuary is looking for volunteers interested in serving
on a new planning committee that's developing a fresh vision and design for our visitors.
The basic goal is to assess what works, what may
not any longer, and how to tie in what visitors learn inside with the outdoor experience
on the trails. Technology may offer opportunities to showcase the work we do
here along with other interactive activities.
Outside, the learning would continue with interpretive signage and seating areas as well as old
fashioned play and discovery experiences for children.
The discussion has just begun, so if you’re interested in
participating contact Diane by email or phone: 508-349-2615, extension 101.

Volunteer Profile: Bruce Maillet
For Bruce Maillet, becoming a Wellfleet Bay volunteer was
a natural fit given his long career in public health and environmental affairs.
Bruce, like so many others, was drawn to the Cape because
of many childhood visits here. When he retired, he rediscovered Wellfleet Bay and decided to try horseshoe crab
monitoring. That experience led to working with diamondback terrapin nesting. He
says the research involved in both programs was his “aha moment”, allowing him
to continue what he enjoyed doing professionally-- working to solve
environmental problems and finding ways to make human activities more
sustainable.
“The world is a fragile place,” Bruce notes. “We have to continually
assess what we are doing and be ready to change, modify, abandon our past
practices as new ones come along.” (photo by Nancy Rabke)

Join our Sea Turtle Rescue Squad!
Sea turtle stranding time is approaching and we always need all the help we can get.
We're looking for volunteers willing to walk bayside beaches especially in Truro
or Dennis to search for cold-stunned sea turtles. Walkers patrol
the beach about 1 hour after high tide. Contact Diane to join up or for any questions.

News from the Front (Desk)
Our front desk volunteers must remain cool and calm on the most frenzied of summer days. Now that the pace is a little slower, we wanted to share some "tales from the front." So we asked some of our greeters about the funniest or oddest encounters they've had.
Carolyn Castiglione: A young man and his girlfriend asked, "Do you serve
beer at your restaurant?" I told them no, that there is no
restaurant here; it's nature trails and wildlife. They left. They definitely
were not looking for nature!
Joyce Hallowell: As I was giving change for $20 to a man at the counter, he said he had
given me a $50. Fortunately, I had no $50's in the till. It taught
me to hold the cash in my hand until the transaction has been completed.
Not funny for me at the time. I wonder how often he succeeds at this
little trick!
Jenny Dickson: A lady asked whether we take credit cards after I confirmed a $3.00
senior citizen charge for her. I charged her card. Then she looked at the
gentleman beside her and told him to pay up his $3.00! So, he proceeded to pay
with his credit card! I thought this was not only funny but a
little crazy.
Front desk greeters are always in high demand. When you volunteer, you'll meet people from all over the world as well as your neighbors!
Don't miss the great early November programs coming up. Click here to see a list and to sign up!
