Natural History Mystery - Solved |
Which fungus grows exclusively on a single evergreen species?
If you chose the fungi on the left, you're correct. The Hemlock Varnish Shelf fungus,Ganoderma tsugae, grows only on Eastern Hemlock, one of our most common forest evergreen trees. It is redder than the Ling Chi, Ganoderma lucidum, a relative which grows only on deciduous trees, mostly sugar maples and is more yellow orange than red.
Both are relatives of those big shelf brackets, the Artist's Fungus, Ganoderma applanatum. You can learn more about evergreen trees (and what grows on them!) at this month's Twelve Essential Species program: Spruce, Fir, and Pine: Evergreen Trees with Joe Choiniere, December 15 and 17.
