Looking to Get Rid of Your 4WD Pickup Truck?

We'd love to speak to you about donating it to Allens Pond!

We're looking for a truck with high mileage, dependability, 4WD and a crew cab, if possible.

Please contact Sanctuary Director Gina Purtell to discuss.

Volunteering

We need your help! Even if you only have an hour, your help can make a tremendous difference. Check out all of our volunteer opportunities online.

We also welcome school and community service groups and can help you craft a meaningful corporate day of service on one of our properties.

Did you know that individuals who serve over 50 hours with us receive a complimentary Mass Audubon volunteer membership, that comes with a variety of benefits (and looks great in your wallet)...?

To sign up or learn more about our volunteer activities please contact Jennifer Costa or call the sanctuary 508-636-2437.

Upcoming Outreach

We've got some great outreach going on this fall, and will be at the Cranberry Harvest Celebration October 10-11 in Wareham and at the Connecting For Change Conference October 23-24, outdoors in the family activities area and encourage you to come down, say "hi" and join us!

Interested in volunteering some time at our outreach tables?

Email Jen and she'll get you on the roster.

Early Fall 2015

Monarch ButterflySigns of fall are everywhere here at Allens Pond - from migrating monarchs to the changing fall foliage. You really should come out and walk the trails to experience these seasonal wonders firsthand.

A highlight of the summer has passed, with the 12th Annual Duck Derby in the rear-view mirror. Thanks to your duck adoptions and a successful festival - we raised close to $50,000 that will go directly to funding the important work we perform year-round at the sanctuary. However, having the Derby behind us also means it's that bittersweet time that marks the end of our summer internships and their departure from working with us on a daily basis. Early mornings counting birds, measuring water quality, and counting plover chicks has ended, but their experiences will last a lifetime.

AP Interns 2015

Summer Intern Update
Here is an update on our 4 interns from this past summer:

Jocelyn Rua is attending Bridgewater State and looking forward to keeping her connection to us. She'll be finishing off the last of the water quality testing through September and Lauren has her involved in more birding opportunities this winter.

Olivia Rothberg is back at Bard for her last semester of college; the photos from the game cameras she set up in August have come back in with images of foxes and gulls - very important data for our predator studies.

Kali Block, who excelled in grassland bird surveys, is living in Middletown RI and working as a classroom assistant. Her end goal is to attend graduate school in the near future.

Sarah Camacho, from Taunton, has been essential on our land and trails, weeding gardens at the field station and opening trail edges the Quansett Trail. Sarah gained valuable property management experience and will be volunteering with us one day a week in the fall. This dedicated group of volunteer interns contributed so much to our late spring and summer seasons and we can't thank them enough for jobs well done!

Osprey Monitoring Update
The osprey had a banner year in 2015 with higher counts of fledged chicks than in any past year on record; a total of 165 young osprey have now launched from the Westport River and Allens Pond for their first solo trips south to unknown wintering grounds. Our interns and volunteers also enjoyed the dry and relatively mild spring which made monitoring positively delightful. Interns Olivia, Kali, and Emily got their feet wet and their hands smelly on the marsh, peering into nests, sometimes removing hazardous fishing line, other times identifying fish delivered in by the chicks’ father. Emily’s careful scrutiny of a select few of the nests confirmed Alan Poole’s analysis that herring are the source of success, particularly in April and May. Our Lacy Fellow, Amanda Palmer, furthered her skills in banding the young as well as educating all ages about this species and the habitat it needs. We are grateful for our team of volunteers who help keep the nest platforms ready to support these raptor families. Now is the season to come join us as we shore up poles and braces to weather another winter. Please contact the sanctuary if you have useable lumber or tools to donate, would like to join in the heavy lifting, or want to sponsor a platform for next season’s osprey family.

Autumn in New England truly is a great time of year to experience both the Allens Pond and Great Neck wildife sanctuaries - we hope to see you soon!
