Volunteering

We need your help! Even if you only have an hour, your help can make a tremendous difference. Check out all of our volunteer opportunities online.

We also welcome school and community service groups and can help you craft a meaningful corporate day of service on one of our properties.

Did you know that individuals who serve over 50 hours with us receive a complimentary Mass Audubon volunteer membership, that comes with a variety of benefits (and looks great in your wallet)...?

To sign up or learn more about our volunteer activities please contact Jennifer Costa or call the sanctuary 508-636-2437.

Late Fall 2015

Monarch ButterflyGreetings from the SouthCoast! As the temperatures start to cool off and we tinker with the idea of lighting the wood stove here at the field station, we're watching the last of the monarchs we reared emerge and take flight and looking forward to Thanksgiving next week.

Speaking of thanks, a big round of it goes to the the Dartmouth Local Cultural Council for funding our seasonal monarch tagging station, hosted at Allens Pond. The tagging station was open one weekend each in September and October, and attracted both individuals and families. Local high school teachers were contacted to ask for volunteers both at the tagging station and four afterschool dates.

Participants ranged from retirees are who were interested in adventure, adults, families with young children, and mature students. Participants included: One Dartmouth High School student who attended the program as an assistant; a Dartmouth High School teacher who attended an afterschool program; A high school student visiting Dartmouth for a marching band competition attended with his grandmother who lives in Dartmouth; New Bedford Voc Tech students and a Bristol Community College class assisted with monarch tagging with funds provided by the Dartmouth LCC to purchase tags. Participants who were interested were able to take home monarch caterpillars to rear and release at home, and all program participants received a monarch quick guide and a ‘Plant Milkweed’ bumper sticker.

Additionally, the monarch program was in the news - Dartmouth Week printed a story on the program. We'll keep you posted on their migration as we receive tag data from Mexico.

Late fall is a great time of year to experience both the Allens Pond and Great Neck wildife sanctuaries - we hope to see you soon!
