May 2016

American Oystercatchers - Ben CarrollGreetings from the SouthCoast! As the temperatures start to rise and the days extend into enjoyable, warm evenings - the wait is finally over for spring to arrive.

Our SouthCoast Osprey Project is underway, with active nests on both branches of the Westport River and our very busy pair at Allens Pond.

Our beaches are busy as well, with American Oystercatcher, Least Tern and Piping Plovers nesting and tending to their new families.  The grasslands and trails are busy places with basking snakes, buzzing pollinators, darting swallows and some very attentive raptors all enjoying the natural bounty that this season of renewal offers.

It's also time for our summer interns to arrive, our seasonal coastal waterbird staff to be monitoring the beaches, our summer youth programming staff to lead happy groups of kids on days full of learning, exploration and fun and our fantastic summer fundraiser - the Allens Pond Duck Derby!

The 13th Annual Allens Pond Duck Derby is underway - with duck sales available 24/7 online and at the Bayside Restaurant and community outreach events after Memorial Day. The grand prize, as always is dinner for two - ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD - with r/t airfare and 2 nights' lodging and last year, the winners chose Ecuador, where they enjoyed dinner before heading to the Galapagos, then on to Machu Picchu. Adopt online and get in the race today!  All of the money from the event goes directly towards supporting the work we do at Allens Pond.  Who knows, lucky year 13 could be your year to win

It truly is a great time of year to experience both the Allens Pond and Great Neck wildife sanctuaries - we hope to see you soon!

We're Working Towards a New Certification!

Service Enterprise We are proud to announce our recently completed training with the Mass Service Alliance and that we are presently working towards gaining full certification as a Service Enterprise, as developed by Points of Light, a national service organization.  A Service Enterprise is an organization that leverages volunteers and their skills to successfully deliver on the social mission of the organization. These high performance organizations have deeply integrated volunteers into their strategic plan and organizational structure, thereby allowing them to reduce costs, and increase efficiency and effectiveness in providing services to fulfill their mission.

Part of this process was developing our own service mission, which is what is "top of mind" as we further develop and improve our volunteer program:

Mass Audubon SouthCoast Sanctuaries strives to be an effective and professional Service Enterprise where individuals and groups of all ages recognize our sanctuaries as the places people can embrace their passion for the SouthCoast by sharing environmental experiences, connecting to self, sanctuary and community and protecting and stewarding significant wildlife habitat for all generations.

Through our continued partnerships with SouthCoast Serves and the United Way of Greater New Bedford, this opportunity has challenged and inspired us as we worked in a cohort that included SouthCoast Health, The Lloyd Center for the Environment, PAACA and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The Service Enterprise Initiative is a holistic and customized change management approach to help organizations gain a greater return on volunteer investment and better achieve their mission. We have a lot to work towards and are hoping to gain certification in one year.
