Wayne Petersen's Bird-a-thon Fund Raising Page
Regardless of the ravages of COVID-19, with this long-awaited season comes Mass Audubon's most important annual fund raising event - Bird-a-thon! Despite the many restrictions and constraints currently in place, I am once again committed to raising money for bird conservation. I am hopeful you will join me by making an especially generous donation in support of bird conservation this year, because more than ever, birds need your help.
As the senior member of our BAT team, I have seen many bird species seriously decline during my lifetime, including such once widespread or familiar species as American Black Duck, Northern Bobwhite, Upland Sandpiper, Red Knot, Common Nighthawk, American Kestrel, Cliff Swallow, Vesper Sparrow, and Eastern Meadowlark to name but a few.
The deterioration or loss of important avian habitats such as barrier beaches, saltmarshes, grasslands, shrublands, and managed forests - many of which were designated as Massachusetts Important Bird Areas (IBAs) as recently as 17 years ago - are but one of the many challenges today facing our feathered friends.
Since my college days in the 1960s when I led Mass Audubon tours at Monomoy NWR for Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary, I've never lost my passion for bird conservation. For over 40 years I have been giving lectures, teaching birding courses, and guiding birding groups on international tours. I have also co-edited two Massachusetts breeding bird atlases, organized 28 statewide Birders Meetings, and authored three books on Massachusetts birdlife. These activities have underscored my appreciation of how significant funding is to bird conservation. The dollars raised through my support of Bird-a-thon go directly toward advancing Mass Audubon's bird conservation efforts.
Having spent most of my life working on behalf of bird conservation, I hope you will willingly join me and my colleagues as we continue to work to ensure the future well-being of birds in Massachusetts. A generous donation to my fundraising page by clicking on the blue box to the right of this page will go a long way toward supporting our effort. With heartfelt thanks in advance for your support!
