Peggy's Bird-a-thon Appeal
This is my 11th year participating in Mass Audubon’s annual birding competition, Bird-a-thon. This year's event will look a little different, due to COVID-19. We're calling it "Bird-at-home-a-thon," because it will be carbon-free, safety-focused, and family friendly. Teams representing different Mass Audubon sanctuaries and programs will come together -- virtually -- to collectively identify as many species of birds in a 24-hour period and also complete other fun, nature-based activities from their homes.
One thing that hasn't changed, however, is that Bird-a-thon is still an important source of funding for environmental research, conservation, and education – at a time when many of us are turning to nature for an escape. Going outside for a walk, feeling the sun on my face, getting some fresh air, observing the “greening” of yards and woods, and – of course – watching the birds at my feeder have been such a boost for my spirits at this difficult time. I appreciate that nature has been here for me, and I’d like to keep it that way. By supporting Mass Audubon’s Bird-a-thon, you are supporting our environment at a time when we need nature most – and it needs us.
Who knows how long it will be before our lives return to normal, or what “normal” will look like? But one thing I am sure of: The earth will still be our home, and it will need organizations like Mass Audubon to protect it through conservation, education, and advocacy.
Thanks in advance for your support!
