From May 11-12, over 750 people from all over Massachusetts will focus on nature by participating in Mass Audubon’s annual Bird-a-thon fundraiser.
The centerpiece of Bird-a-thon is a 24-hour birding competition where teams representing different Mass Audubon sanctuaries and programs attempt to identify the most species of birds in a 24-hour period. Bird-a-thon serves as a reminder of the variety and abundance of wildlife that surrounds us and our responsibility to preserve their habitats.
This year, I am raising money for Bird-a-thon because I believe in the importance of protecting the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. I support Mass Audubon’s efforts to protect and steward the environment of Massachusetts through conservation, education, and advocacy.
I will be birding as part of the team supporting Drumlin Farm, a MAS sanctuary dear to my heart and one I have been involved with, either as teacher or volunteer, for decades. For thousands of people Drumlin Farm has been where they got excited about birds and then this interest spilled over into other aspects of natural history. I look at toddlers visiting the Farm and think, "They may be future conservation activists!"
