From May 10-11, over 750 people from all over Massachusetts will focus on nature by participating in Mass Audubon’s annual Bird-a-thon fundraiser.
The centerpiece of Bird-a-thon is a 24-hour birding competition where teams representing different Mass Audubon sanctuaries and programs attempt to identify the most species of birds in a 24-hour period. Bird-a-thon serves as a reminder of the variety and abundance of wildlife that surrounds us and our responsibility to preserve their habitats. It also presents a snapshot of which bird species are around, thereby providing data for conservation.
Once again Steven and Christine will participate in the competitive birding and are hoping to raise money for the South Shore Sanctuaries team. This team limits the birding to Plymouth County; thereby limiting our carbon footprint while hopefully still see a good number of birds (last year our team totalled 178 species for the county in just one day).
We believe in the importance of protecting the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. We enjoy the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield in particular for the grassland species like Bobolink, Meadowlark, Barn Swallow and American Kestrel.
We also strongly believe that all the programs for families and schools offered by the South Shore Sanctuaries are a very important way to connect children to nature.
Knowledge leads to appreciation, appreciation leads to conservation. That is why we support Mass Audubon’s efforts to protect and steward the environment of Massachusetts through conservation, education, and advocacy.
We know you do too, so please join us in supporting this important work by making a donation through our personal fundraising page.
