Statewide Fundraiser & Birding Competition

For 40 years, Bird-a-thon has brought birders, nature-lovers, and families together to celebrate nature and raise funds that provide essential year-round support for Mass Audubon's conservation, nature education, and advocacy work.

No matter if you join for the fun of it or for the thrill of competition (or both!), every team member has the opportunity to enjoy birds while raising or donating essential funds for Mass Audubon.

Rally your friends and family to join you or support your fundraising efforts and go birding with us May 12-13!

How to Participate

Join a team! This year, 13 teams representing different Mass Audubon regions and departments are raising money while helping people of all ages connect with nature in communities across the state (and beyond!).

During Bird-a-thon weekend, these teams will compete head-to-head in three ways:

  • Fundraising to provide essential year-round support for Mass Audubon's conservation, nature education, and advocacy work
  • Competitively birding, attempting to see (or hear) the greatest number of bird species in 24 hours
  • Completing a series of fun, nature-based activities.

Please note: Only competitive birders' species checklist counts towards their team’s birding total, while other team members bird for fun, complete nature-based activities, or participate solely through fundraising. Please see our Guidelines, Rules and Regulations for more details.

What is Bird-a-thon?

Bird-a-thon is Mass Audubon’s largest fundraiser, bringing together supporters from across the state to bird and enjoy nature while raising essential funds for nature conservation, education, and advocacy.

Since the event began in 1983, thousands of dedicated supporters and team members have raised $3.8 million and counting for Mass Audubon, its sanctuaries, and its programs across the state.

About Mass Audubon

Mass Audubon was founded in 1896 by two Boston women who used their voices to stop the slaughter of birds for fashion, and it has remained an independent organization at the forefront of conservation for more than 126 years.
