From May 14-15, nature heroes from all over Massachusetts will focus on nature by participating in Mass Audubon's annual Bird-a-thon fundraiser. This year Mass Audubon decided to include people from out of state again, so I will be birding from New Jersey.
Teams representing different Mass Audubon sanctuaries and programs will come together to collectively identify as many species of birds in a 24-hour period and also complete other fun, nature-based activities from their home. Bird-a-thon serves as a reminder of the variety and abundance of wildlife that surrounds us and our responsibility to preserve their habitats.
During the summer of 2018 I was a wildlife intern with Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary. This opportunity was one that catapulted me into my environmental career and strengthened my love of birds. Any time I hear the chattering of barn swallows or the chirping of osprey I get nostalgia for Massachusett's coasts. Not only did I participate in some awesome field work, but I also met some great people through Mass Audubon and will always be grateful for the experiences from that summer.
This year, I am raising money for Bird-a-thon because I believe in the importance of protecting the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. I support Mass Audubon's efforts to protect and steward the environment of Massachusetts through conservation, education, and advocacy.
